Walz Statement on FISA Amendments Reauthorization Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Tim Walz (MN-01) released the following statement after voting against the FISA Amendments Reauthorization Act:
“Protecting the American people is our highest responsibility as a nation, and finding the right balance between gathering critical intelligence and safeguarding our civil liberties is vital to upholding this responsibility.
“While FISA is an integral tool our Intelligence Community utilizes to better defend our country, the bill I voted against today contains a dangerous loophole on warrantless searches on American citizens. As a result, I believe it does not uphold our fourth amendment rights.
“When Congress chooses to rush and fails to collaborate, as Republicans have done rampantly this Congress and did so yet again with this bill, that’s when mistakes are made. This intelligence-privacy balance is too important a matter to get wrong. As we have had no hearings in the House on this legislation, I agree with my good friend and Ranking Member of the Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff, that we need additional time to give this bill more thorough consideration.
“Congress must go back to the drawing board to get this right so that we can both protect the civil liberties of the American people and ensure our national security professionals have the tools they need to keep us safe.”
