Walz Announces 2013 Congressional Art Competition
Winning works are displayed for one year at U.S. Capitol
Washington, DC – Congressman Tim Walz today kicked off the 2013 Congressional Art Competition by inviting high school students from across Minnesota’s First District to submit their artwork for the contest.
“I am excited to participate in the 2013 Congressional Art Competition,” said Walz. “The chance to see winning artwork from talented students all across the county is my favorite part of walking between committee hearings and meetings with constituents in Washington. I can’t wait to see the winning piece from the talented students in southern Minnesota this year.”
Beginning in 1982, the Congressional Art Competition serves as an opportunity for members of Congress to recognize and encourage the artistic talent in the nation, as well as in each congressional district. Christina Gile won last year’s First District competition with her painting, “The Mist-ery.”
The first place winner will have their artwork displayed in the Cannon Tunnel, leading to the U.S. Capitol, for an entire year. The art contest is free and open to students in grades 9 through 12 who reside in the First Congressional District.
The following types of artwork can be submitted:
Paintings - including oil, acrylics, and watercolor
Drawings - including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers
Collage
Prints - including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
Mixed Media
Computer Generated Art
Photography
