Walz Statement on H.J. Res. 40

Feb 3, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Statement from Representative Tim Walz (MN-01) regarding his vote on H.J. Res. 40:

“I hear and respect the concerns of those opposed to H.J. Res. 40, but I could not in good conscience support the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) December 19, 2016 rule. I share in the American Civil Liberties Union’s (ACLU) perspective that the SSA’s rule disregards the right to due process all Americans are entitled under the Fifth Amendment, and discriminates against our fellow Americans living with mental disabilities, including the men and women now living with invisible wounds borne from defending our freedom in uniform overseas. Such discrimination unfortunately progresses the baseless stereotype that all folks with mental disabilities are inherently a threat to themselves and the American people. I fully reject this harmful and unfounded stereotype, and it is on these grounds that I voted for H.J. Res. 40.”
