WASHINGTON D.C. — Congressman Walz is continuing his efforts to increase transparency and accountability by pressing House Leadership to post legislation online for the general public to view before Congress votes. Monday, Walz sent a letter, along with 23 of his colleagues to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.
“A transparent and open government ensures the public has an opportunity to participate in the legislative process,” said Walz. “As a representative of the people of southern Minnesota, it is important that I know how my constituents feel about proposed legislation. I am proud of the work Congress has already done to increase transparency and look forward to continuing that progress.”
Congressman Walz has been a strong advocate for transparency and accountability since he was first elected to Congress. In 2007 and 2008, Congressman Walz took the unusual step of posting all of his appropriations requests online and then helped lead the push to require all members of Congress to post this information on their website. This year, Congressman Walz successfully added an amendment to a TARP reform package passed by the House that required the Treasury Department to publish reports on the internet detailing how banks and other financial institutions spent the money they received as part of the Wall Street bailout.
