Mankato, MN — Today, Congressman Walz announced more than $4.2 million in grant money for regional airports. The Albert Lea Municipal Airport will receive more than $3 million and the Windom Municipal will receive more than $1.1 million. The funds are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and will be used to rehabilitate the airports’ runways.

“I am a strong supporter of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act and these projects are great news for Albert Lea and Windom,” said Walz. “Regional airports in southern Minnesota are a vital economic development tool and these projects will expand jobs and future economic opportunity. This investment will fund the third phase of a new runway in Albert Lea and rehabilitate the runway in Windom.”

“I am pleased that we’re able to invest in local infrastructure, produce jobs and that some of this money is coming to southwestern Minnesota,” said State Representative Rod Hamilton, (R- 22B).

“Rural airports help to drive the economy in southern Minnesota, said State Senator Jim Vickerman (D-22).  “This funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is welcome news that promises to create badly needed construction jobs in our area and long term economic development opportunities.”

“The City of Albert Lea is pleased to receive this grant which will expedite work on our airport’s runway expansion,” said Mayor Mike Murtaugh. “We’re also hoping this may give us the flexibility to consider a concrete surface rather than asphalt which will result in a longer lifecycle and reduced maintenance in future years.  We won’t be able to make that determination until the project is bid.  We appreciate the work that our city engineering and airport staff has done in submitting this project for consideration under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.”
