WASHINGTON D.C. — Congressman Tim Walz, a public school teacher and retired National Guard Command Sgt. Major, released the following statement regarding President Obama's address to the Joint Session of Congress.

"President Obama's speech tonight focused on the right priorities: creating jobs, getting our economy back on track and fiscal responsibility.

"President Obama was honest about the terrible economic mess we've inherited and how difficult it is going to be to get out of it. But he also showed confidence that we can get out of this mess and that our best days lie ahead of us.

"The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act he just signed into law was our first step in the right direction. It will create and save millions of jobs and get money flowing through the economy quickly again.

"One way it will do that is with crucial investments in economic priorities such as education. That's why I am very pleased that Rushford-Peterson Schools Superintendent Chuck Ehler was able to be my guest at the President's address this evening. He understands why this is such an important first step.

"I was especially impressed by President Obama's commitment to cutting the deficit in half by the end of his first term. It is a serious commitment and he has a real plan to do it. I look forward to getting his budget outline later this week.

"I was also pleased that President Obama put us on a path to long-term growth by addressing the serious need for health care reform, committing to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and recognizing the importance of modern schools that will help our children can compete in the global economy.

"All of this is going to require hard choices and shared sacrifice.  But I know that we are capable of it.  And I share President Obama's confidence that we will come out of this stronger than ever."
