WASHINGTON D.C. — Today, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced assistance for struggling dairy farmers after hearing from Rep. Tim Walz and other Members of Congress about the need for action. The Obama administration will increase the amount paid for dairy products from August 2009 to October 2009 through the Dairy Product Price Support Program.
“I am pleased that the Secretary has taken this important step to help our dairy farmers in Minnesota,” said Walz. “This will provide much needed assistance to both our famers and our families who are struggling to put food on the table in these tough economic times.”
Congressman Walz is a co-chair of the Congressional Dairy Farmer’s Caucus. The dairy industry is vital to Minnesota’s economy.
The price paid for nonfat dry milk will increase from $0.80 per pound to $0.92 per pound, the price paid for cheddar blocks will increase from $1.13 per pound to $1.31 per pound, and the price of cheddar barrels will increase from $1.10 per pound to $1.28 per pound.
